2 Signs Your Home's Old Vinyl Windows Need Replacing

Posted on: 5 March 2021

If you have noticed a marked increase in your energy bills and feel that drafts have become a common occurrence in your house, you may be wondering how the outdoor air is making its way inside. One possible culprit to the issues you are facing is that your old vinyl windows are no longer doing their job. If you believe this may be the case, look for the following signs that it may be time to replace the windows with new ones.

1.  Condensation Forms on the Glass Inside the Window Panes

One sign that your home's old vinyl windows should be replaced is the presence of condensation that forms on the surfaces between the glass panes. When the panes are properly glazed and sealed, moisture is not able to penetrate the barrier that is created. However, over time, the glazing starts to deteriorate and the seals break down. As a result, moisture starts to build up between the glass panes.

When the sun shines through the panes, it forms condensation. Unable to fully escape to evaporate, the condensation remains in between the glass. Not only does this fog up your windows, but the constant exposure to moisture causes the further breakdown of the seals. Because the panes are not fully sealed, air can also pass around them and into your home.

2.  Windows Stick When Opening and Closing

Another sign that it is time to have new vinyl windows installed on your house is when you start noticing that you are having difficulty opening and closing them. Every time you move the windows up or down, you notice that they stick in certain areas, making you have to use force to move them.

After years of constant moving, the frames of the windows can become warped and knocked out of alignment. When this happens, the warped or misaligned areas will start to rub against the sides of the window jams. Because the frames are no longer fitting snugly within the jams, gaps will form between them. This will allow the passage of air and create drafts in your house.

If your old vinyl windows are sticking and constantly have condensation between the glass panes, they are most likely allowing cold and hot air into your home and driving up your energy bills. Contact a window installation service in your area to have them assess your windows and house so that they can discuss your options for replacing the old windows with new ones.

Learning About Residential Windows

Hey there, my name is Deena Orson. Welcome to my site about windows. As the mother of four boys, I have seen my fair share of broken windows, both in our family home and, unfortunately, throughout the neighborhood. As a result, I have a good working relationship with window manufacturers and installers in our area. I have learned all about double and triple paned window systems. I would like to use this site to explore the window manufacturing and installation process in more detail. I will also discuss technological advancements in this industry as they are developed. Please visit my site often to learn more.
