Dry Rot
Dry rot is caused by a fungus. The fungus consumes most of the wood, and then the structural integrity of the wood fails. You see this most often in older homes and hotter climes. The door frame that suffers from dry rot will eventually crack, cave, and buckle. The result is a splintered doorway that looks like an earthquake hit it.
Earthquake
Speaking of earthquakes, this is another thing that can destroy door frames. A particularly violent earthquake with a house located near the epicenter of the quake will shake windows and doors to the point that they shatter and crack all over the place. Nothing damages a door frame quite like a runaway vehicle.
