How To Care For Your Vinyl Replacement Windows

Posted on: 7 February 2018

Did you recently get vinyl replacement windows installed at your home? If so, you may want to know how you should care for them so that they continue to look as good as the day they are installed. Here are several tips that you should follow.

Clean the Window Tracks

Ever notice how windows become difficult to open over the years? This is due to not cleaning the tracks that the windows slide across to close and open. Start by looking for small opening or holes at the very bottom of the windows. These are called weep holes, and their purpose is to let any water that got into the windows due to rain drain out of them.

You can clean the weep holes and tracks by pouring some hot water into the holes. It will flush away all of the debris and dirt that is causing the weep holes to become blocked. Follow it up by wiping down the track with a damp cloth.

Wipe Down the Window Frames

The remainder of the window frames should be occasionally wiped down to remove that dirt and dust that has settled on them. You can do this by combining warm water with dish soap to create a simple cleaning solution. Dip a rag into the solution, ring it out, and wipe down the frames. If there's a lot of dirt on the frames, use a brush so that you can scrub it off.

You want to avoid using a cleaning solution that has petroleum in it, such as polishes and solvents, as well as chlorine bleach cleaners. They two cleaning materials can cause visible damage to the vinyl frame, especially when you use them often.

Inspect the Caulking

You'll want to inspect the caulking found around the outside and inside of the windows a few times during the year. This caulking can wear out over the years, which will require replacement. Caulking that is loose or worn out should have new caulking applied to it, which will help prevent drafts and make the windows look nice.

Clean the Glass

The trick to cleaning window glass is to use a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth to not leave behind any streaks. You can also use newspaper to wipe the glass surface, since the newspaper will not leave behind any of the paper on the glass.

Learning About Residential Windows

Hey there, my name is Deena Orson. Welcome to my site about windows. As the mother of four boys, I have seen my fair share of broken windows, both in our family home and, unfortunately, throughout the neighborhood. As a result, I have a good working relationship with window manufacturers and installers in our area. I have learned all about double and triple paned window systems. I would like to use this site to explore the window manufacturing and installation process in more detail. I will also discuss technological advancements in this industry as they are developed. Please visit my site often to learn more.
