Weatherproofing That New Place

Once you close escrow on your new home you want to make sure you turn it into a home you will love and get years of true pleasure out of while making fantastic memories. You should make sure you do some things around the house that will add to your comfort when you are in it and that will cut down on your living expenses when possible and help you stay warmer and cooler during different seasons. Weatherproofing your home can be a great place to start. Here are some things you should know about weatherproofing your place:

Check with the city first – In some areas there are grants given out to homeowners and even renters who are in a house that can use weatherproofing. The grants help you to get those things taken care of either for free or for a huge discount.

Use trees wisely – Trees can be helpful in summer and winter. During the summer they can help shade the walls and windows to your house. During the winter, they can catch some of that snow so it doesn't pile up against the side of the house, making it harder to warm it up inside.

Install awnings over certain walls – Installing long awnings that provide shade to walls that get hit by the majority of the days sunlight can do wonders for keeping the house cooler. You can get ones you can put up and pull down as needed.

Screen in porches – Screening in your porches gives you a more comfortable place to enjoy the outside in both summer and winter. It will give shade in the summer and block some of that chilling wind in the winter.

Replace thin or weak doors – Replacing thin or weak doors not only helps you to enjoy a safer home, but it also helps keep out drafts. Make sure the new doors fit perfectly or you can end up with drafty spaces.

Add basement and attic insulation – Basement insulation can help keep the house warmer in winter and attic insulation helps keep the house cooler during the summer.

Have a programmable thermostat installed – a programmable thermostat helps keep the house at a temperature you want it at all day which helps with comfort and with bills.

Have your windows weatherproofed – Weatherproofing the windows can be done by having dual paned windows put in. Dual paned windows have two sheets of glass instead of one and between them is a thin layer of air which also works as some extra insulation. Having tint put on the outside as a sun reflector will also help. You also want to be sure the sills are still in good shape and that the weatherproofing strips aren't cracked or brittle.

Learning About Residential Windows

Hey there, my name is Deena Orson. Welcome to my site about windows. As the mother of four boys, I have seen my fair share of broken windows, both in our family home and, unfortunately, throughout the neighborhood. As a result, I have a good working relationship with window manufacturers and installers in our area. I have learned all about double and triple paned window systems. I would like to use this site to explore the window manufacturing and installation process in more detail. I will also discuss technological advancements in this industry as they are developed. Please visit my site often to learn more.
