Getting The Size Just Right: 3 Tips To Ensure Window Improvements Are Measured Correctly

Posted on: 12 July 2017

Are you planning a window improvement project for your home? The openings need to be measured for everything from curtains to replacement windows. It is important the you get the measurements right to ensure you do not have problems with the improvements to your windows and doors. Here are a few tips that will ensure your openings get measured correctly when you do improvement projects:

1. Measuring for Shutters, Replacements and New Window Installations

The replacement windows, shutters and new installations that you plan on doing need to be measured differently than other improvements. First, measure the existing windows and take note of the size. If you plan on installing shutters, this is the measurement that will be needed. If you plan on replacements, you will need to measure the inside of window casings. For new windows, the measurements should be the rough opening size, which is measured from the wood framing behind the casings.

2. Measuring You Curtain Window Treatments with A Little Room to Spare

Curtains are one of the few improvements where there is a small margin for error, but you want to make sure they are not measured to small. Measure your window sizes from the outside and add a couple of inches. To measure the height of curtains, consider if you want them to go from floor-to-ceiling, only to the bottom of window seals or be slightly longer. Remember that larger curtains will require more material to make, so they are likely going to cost you more.

3. Window Treatments That Need Tight Measurements on Inside Of Casing

There are also some window treatments that need to be measured accurately inside the window casing. Thermal shades, blinds and other types of treatments need to fit tightly in the opening, but not be too wide. Measure the bottom and top of the window for width and use the smallest measurement to ensure you do not have problems with installation. The height of window treatments will give you more room for error, but you want to make sure you do not take measurements too short. Measure the height and add a few inches to it, which will allow for small differences and ensure your treatments are the right height.

Learning About Residential Windows

Hey there, my name is Deena Orson. Welcome to my site about windows. As the mother of four boys, I have seen my fair share of broken windows, both in our family home and, unfortunately, throughout the neighborhood. As a result, I have a good working relationship with window manufacturers and installers in our area. I have learned all about double and triple paned window systems. I would like to use this site to explore the window manufacturing and installation process in more detail. I will also discuss technological advancements in this industry as they are developed. Please visit my site often to learn more.
